Proces tot Franse boomschors

We beginnen bij het begin. De stam van de Franse pijnboom (officieel pinus maritima genoemd) bestaat uit meerdere lagen. De laag aan de buitenkant noemt men bast. Naarmate de stam dikker wordt dan vervalt de buitenste laag van de bast doordat deze afsterft. Wanneer dit gebeurt dan ontstaat er schors. Schors is een laag dat ook wel kurk heet. Het is laag dat niet levend is, maar het beschermt de boom wel tegen beschadiging, uitdroging en narigheden van buitenaf. Het kleverige deel van de boom, wat u vast herkent, is hars. Dit is een stof dat wordt geproduceerd door de boom wanneer de bast, de buitenste laag, is beschadigd. Dit is een stof die vrijkomt om te beschermen tegen insecten.

De schors is vrij dun en elastisch. Dit maakt dat het vrijwel niet kan scheuren. De dunne bast maakt de boom kwetsbaar voor Uv-stralingen van de zon. De nieuwe laag van schors onder de afgestoten schors zal verkleuren naar een groene tint. De stam zal hierdoor een typische kleur van groen en bruin krijgen.
